What Are Good RC Cars?

Remote Control and RC Cars Reviews

Petrol, Electric and Nitro RC Cars

Remote or RC cars provide some of the best thrills, especially to those who are interested in the structure of automobiles and love speed. It is incredible how a small model can replicate what a full-scale vehicle does on proper roads and highways, simply by the touch of a button.

You can even join clubs and participate in races, take the car off-roading and a lot more. A good remote control car is certainly a prized possession. Whether you are just entering your teens or a fully grown adult, there is no age that is not good enough to be excited by this marvel of technology.

If you are wondering about the type of options in the market, the following is a brief primer on some of the best remote control cars. But first, a short description of the three major categories of cars:

Electric RC Cars

Nothing could possibly be easier than an electric remote control car. Just as your phone, laptop or any other electronic device that you may use, an electric remote control just needs to be charged and it is ready to run.

Depending on the type of battery the car has, it can easily run between 15 to 30 minutes on a full battery. Most new electric remote control cars come with extremely efficient batteries, which allow you to recharge the car quickly and run it, without having to worry about fumes, loud engine noises or refuelling the car.

This is also the ideal choice of a car if you want to use it indoors. An electric remote control car can also be driven on a variety of surfaces and often you can find models that are perfect for off-roading and racing.

The speed control in this type of vehicle is essentially the throttle. The receiver sends out signals to the throttle to gauge how much voltage should be sent from the battery to the motor so it can operate at that speed accordingly.

Depending on how equipped the vehicle is, the speed system may be a basic one-touch step with a limited speed range or it can have adjustable throttle options.

Not much else is too radically different in an electric remote control vehicle other than the fact that it uses a battery to operate the motor.

Nitro Remote Control Cars

Nitro remote control cars refer to systems that use a special kind of fuel for the engine. This is a methanol-based fuel that has nitromethane. You may be familiar with gasoline used in a full-size vehicle.

Nitro fuel is the equivalent of that and is used in a smaller scale, remote-controlled models. The nitro engine and fuel are efficient and relatively clean options for remote control cars.

If you are a racing enthusiast and enjoy the big noise of the throttle going off, then this is the perfect type of vehicle for you. The satisfactory sound of the engine coming alive is unparalleled.

Typically, the fuel has about 20% of nitromethane, though the range may go higher or lower depending on the make of the car. Often, synthetic oil or castor oil is mixed with the fuel for cooling and to provide lubrication.

A nitro car will have two servos, of which one will be connected to the throttle and the brake, while the other is connected to the steering wheel and other accompaniments.

The servo that is connected to the throttle and carburettor is the one that manoeuvers the speed of the car. It is also the servo that has control over the brakes.

Petrol Remote Control Cars

Similar to a nitro car, petrol remote control cars also use a type of fuel instead of electricity to operate the car. However, the big difference between a petrol car and a nitro car is that the former uses a spark plug, while the latter uses glow plugs.

When the engine is ignited, a spark is generated by the movement of magnets against a coil that is attached to the flywheel. Since the engine responds directly to the spark, it eliminates the need for a glow igniter or other kinds of starting equipment.

Petrol cars use two-stroke fuel, which is a combination of unleaded petrol mixed with normal two-stroke oil. Typically, the ratio is between 25:1 or 30:1 if it is a large-scale remote control car.

Since the engines run on this type of combination fuel, petrol cars also tend to be much bigger than their nitro counterparts and are usually available in 1:5 or 1:4 scale.

While the bigger size of the car also means they tend to be more expensive, petrol cars are easier to maintain and the fuel is not so specialised that it can get hard to acquire. You can buy the fuel from any petrol station, making it quite convenient to refuel the car.

Final Thoughts

What is a Good Cheap RC Car?

A great cheap rc car, the HSP 1:12 Scale Electric Buggy

We have purchased and reviewed a number of cheap remote control cars so there is a wide choice. However we loved the HSP 1:12 scale Electric RC Car even though it’s a 2 wheel drive vehicle.

This HSP Buggy is an entry level model so ideal for beginners but still immense speed with its driver in the front to finish off the speedy look this RC buggy has.

It can be raced on road or off road and comes fully assembled so all you need to do is insert the batteries and you are ready to race.

Even though this is aimed at beginners and it’s a cheap RC car, it still has a waterproof receiver and controlled which can handle wet tracks although we do not recommended deep puddles. Controlled the buggy is a 2.4Ghz transmitter which allows you to race your buggy without other models in the area getting mixed radio signals.

Incorporating great suspension using springs rather than oil filled shock absorbers, it can be raced over a multitude of terrains with ease from concreate to your back garden and fields.

This comes with a brushed motor so if this is your first RC model, look up the difference between a brushed and brushless motor as you will find with experience that the more advanced RC Cars tend to come with either brushless motor or are upgradable from a brushed to brushless using a separate kit.

We love this HSP RC Buggy, with its awesome speed and easy to control and waterproof as much as it can be, it’s immensely fun to race.
